Knowing if your site is suitable is one of the most common concerns people have; after all, swim ponds can be quite large!
We collaborate with you on this during the survey process. But I thought I’d give you some examples of what we look into in terms of site suitability.
1. Topography – site levels – at some point, the land isn’t always viable, depending on the gradient of the site. Retaining walls can help us with this. We use a laser to measure all of the heights on the survey and create a land Topography of the area.
2. Soil Type – All soil types can be worked with, but some are more difficult to work with than others.
A) Pond edging that holds its shape – this is possible with clay and chalk, but may require walls with gravel or soft soil. This is where we work with clients to make sure we take the right approach.
B) Drainage – groundwater sitting beneath a swimming pond can compromise the structure’s integrity: gravel and chalk are free draining, but the clay will likely require additional crates and soakaways. This is referred to as hydrostatic pressure. We can build swim ponds in wet areas using this technique. See the image below.
3. Planning permission may be required due to the location of your home. We provide the documents required for you to submit planning, all of which have been approved. We are creating areas that will benefit wildlife. Examples of the types of issues we have addressed in planning
- Land water drainage and where it goes after it has filled the pond
- Benefits to local wildlife
- Great crested newts
- Areas of natural beauty
- Grade listed, including grade-listed structures which are part of the design
- Ecologists
