How Can You Protect Your Fish From Predators?

Here are five tips and tricks to ensure your fish are kept safe within your pond.

Aerators

Aerators are an excellent way to protect your fish from predators such as herons. The aerator produces bubbles, which means the heron cannot see the fish.

They are also excellent in making sure your water is clear and ensure a healthy ecosystem.

Pond Covers

Pond covers will help protect fish from predators as they stop them from getting in. They can add elegance and class to your pond; however, they may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

They are very large and heavy and can make it more difficult for regular cleaning and maintenance.

Heron Decoys

Decoys are great to allow the predator to think there is already a heron in that part of the garden. This means that anything else is less likely to visit, as they’d be too scared of the heron. This is a much cheaper alternative to a pond cover too.

Fencing

Fencing can help deter predators away. This could be foxes, cats, anything that moves on ground level. Fencing wouldn’t stop any flying visitors from approaching, mind.

Reflective Surfaces

Typically, when herons see reflective lights from shiny objects, they become very confused and tend to fly away. This is like most birds and will help deter them away from your lovely fish.

We hope one of these methods will help protect your fish in the coming months, and as always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to send us an email at yourjourneybegins@pondandgardendesign.co.uk!
